P, S, W, and unmarked coins
Mint marks are small letters identifying a mint facility. On Silver Eagles, these letters appear on particular collector issues; they are not a checklist of every facility that has struck unmarked bullion coins.
| Mark on the coin | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| P | Philadelphia Found on selected collector issues, including the 2011 reverse proof. |
| S | San Francisco Found on selected collector issues, including the 2011 anniversary set’s uncirculated coin. |
| W | West Point Found on proof and collector uncirculated issues, including those in the 2011 anniversary set. |
| No mark | Regular bullion issues These coins carry no mint mark. The absence of a letter does not identify a particular mint facility. |
The available marks vary by year and issue. Always read the mint mark together with the date and finish.

Regular bullion Silver Eagles have no mint mark. An origin printed on a grading label is a separate attribution; it does not mean that the letter is present on the coin itself. Record what you can see on the coin separately from information on its packaging.
U.S. Mint: 2001: Silver Proof Eagle production moves to West PointA production change worth remembering
In 2001, the Mint moved regular proof production from Philadelphia to West Point. A W proof dated 1995 has a different context: it was part of the tenth-anniversary set. The year and letter must be read together.

A privy is an additional design symbol associated with a particular release. It is not the same thing as a facility’s mint mark. The Mint’s Star Privy bullion offering and the Liberty Bell symbol on selected 2026 collector coins illustrate the distinction.
Do not assume that all coins dated 2026 have dual dates or a privy. The Mint’s 2026 guide distinguishes the regular bullion edition from these collector releases.
